A big square band-aid that releases hormones, it is about 11/4 inches in diameter and it is beige. Once a week you peel the paper off of the sticky part and slap on one of four places of your body. Hormones are released from the patch thru the skin. The patch has to be changed weekly and does not come off in the bath or shower.
The patch carries the hormones that make the membrane of the cervix thicker. The patch releases the combination of the hormones, progesterone and estrogen that prevents the release of an egg during your period. If you don’t release an egg there is nothing to fertilize so you can’t get pregnant.
Just like other birth control that uses hormones to prevent pregnancy, the patch is began at the time your menstrual cycle begins. Apply the patch to the upper arm, upper torso, buttocks or abdomen; (Do Not use in the breast area) the first Sunday of your period or right after your period. i.e. If you start on a Monday and end on a Friday, apply the patch on Sunday. Change the patch every Sunday for the next three weeks. The fourth week should be the week of your period; no patch is applied that week. Then the following Sunday apply the patch again. Do not apply the patch to the same area each time.
8 out every 100 women will get pregnant if used correctly.
