Opinions regarding this question may vary by each source. Progestin only Birth Control does not seem to elevate the level of depression in woman that are already depressed. The level of depression does seem to be more prevalent among women that are using a contraceptive containing a mixture of estrogen-progestin. Typically it can cause depression with long term use.
There is less of a risk of depression with Progestin only birth control pills. Some women have reported that after they discontinue use of birth control pills they sometimes feel depression as their body’s hormones stabilize. Often symptoms of depression are ignored as mood swings, however depression can be very complex and each woman’s hormone levels are different and may effected differently by taking birth control pills.
If signs of depression such as loneliness, feelings of helplessness, uselessness or thoughts of suicide occur a woman should contact her doctor immediately to request a change in prescription.
