Do Birth Control Pills Raise the Chance of Cancer?

Some changes in the DNA structure of the breast cells make them laden with cancer. Doctors blame inherited mutations in the breast cells as one of the primary reasons for one’s susceptibility towards getting this deadly disease. Repeated usage of birth control pills among women is touted as one among the numerous factors that contribute towards the progression of this disease.

Studies have revealed that the long term use of oral contraceptives causes hormonal imbalances in the body. Various scientists and doctors have conducted several tests on women taking oral contraceptives for a period of more than ten years and concluded that such women were at a higher risk of having this disease. These drugs significantly stimulate the uterine lining which enhances the risk of breast cancer. More research studies have also found that the discontinuation of these pills zeroes down the risk of breast cancer.

It is for this reason that women with a family history of breast cancer must consult their health care provider before using these birth control pills. It is likely that the offspring of the disease-stricken parent inherits the mutated BRCA 1 genes which are primarily responsible for the progression of the disease.  However, offspring inheriting the mutated form of BRCA 2 gene has no risks of inflicting cancer.
