The chemical name for ethynodiol diacetate is 19-nor-17alpha-pregn-4-en-20-yne-3beta, 17-diol diacetate. The chemical name of ethinyl estradiol it is 19-nor- 17alpha-pregna-1, 3, 5 (10)-trien-20-yne-3, 17-diol. Each tablet of Demulen 30 21 contains 2 mg ethynodiol diacetate and 0.03 mg ethinyl estradiol. In addition, there are other inactive ingredients like cornstarch, hydroxypropyl cellulose, ethylcellulose, lactose, povidone, sodium acid phosphate, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide and sodium phosphate dibasic anhydrous. The tablets help to prevent conception if taken regularly. It works by preventing ovulation. It also thickens the cervical mucus so that sperms cannot swim easily into the uterus.

It also thickens the uterine lining so that in case ovulation and fertilization occurs, the fertilized egg cannot implant itself in the uterine lining.
