Birth control tips

Can birth control pills be taken with high blood pressure?

Birth control pills are oral contraceptive pills which contain hormones that prevent ovulation thus preventing pregnancy. These pills contain a hormone called progesterone that can have a direct effect on small blood vessels. As a result of this effect there are chances that your blood pressure may rise while using the birth control pills. Medical researchers have claimed that birth control pills can increase the risk of high blood pressure in some women.

The factors that can cause the risk for high blood pressure while using these pills may be if you are overweight, you have a family history of high blood pressure, have had high blood pressure during previous pregnancy, mild kidney diseases and personal history of blood vessel problem or heart problems.

Consult a doctor before taking any oral contraceptive pills and use only those pills which are prescribed by your doctor. There are chances that your blood pressure may rise while using the birth control pill which does not mean that you discontinue taking the pills. Follow your doctor’s advice based on the circumstances. Your doctor may prescribe you some other pill with lower level of progesterone, try a different method of birth control or may also advice you to continue as normal.
