What Are The Ingredients Of The Ortho Evra Patch?

Just like any other birth control method, ortho evra patch is also used to prevent pregnancy. The only difference between ortho evra patch and birth control pills is that the former passes hormones in the blood through skin and the later is taken orally. Ortho evra patch is a thin matrix type patch consisting of three layers.

The backing layer is composed of flexible film of pigmented polythene on the outer layer which is of low density and the inner layer composed of polyester. These layers are used to provide support to the middle layer and prevent them from contamination due to environmental factor. Polybutene adhesive forms the middle layer with the present of active components known as estrogen and progesterone hormone. For the protection of adhesive layer, the third layer is made up of liner and has to be removed at the time of application of the patch.

The estrogen and progesterone hormone will prevent the ovulation process due to which the egg will not be released. They also make the internal lining of the uterus thin so that the egg cannot get implanted on it. The hormones present in the patch will make the cervical mucus in the vagina thick due to which the sperms will be blocked and will not be able to fertilize the egg.
