Progesterone is a hormone that is released by the ovaries of a woman. This hormone is produced in considerable quantity during the second phase of the menstrual cycle. Expecting women are believed to produce more than usual quantities of this hormone by the organ called placenta.

To talk precisely, this hormone is found in the ovaries in placenta, which multiplies in growth as soon as the woman reaches her ovulation period. According to doctors, pregnant women produce around 10 times more progesterone in comparison to other women. The level of this hormone drastically drops at the time of labor in order to aid the woman through this tough journey.

 In case, the value of this essential hormone shows abnormally high, it is quite likely for the woman to carry twins. The main function of this hormone is to build the lining of the uterus in which the fertilized egg stays and grows. It is further passed on to the child from the mother in order to get converted into the corticosteroid hormones in the adrenal gland.  This integral hormone is believed to play a vital role in development of female’s reproduction system. Low levels of progesterone leads the endometrial lining to reduce which follows periods.
