What is the Rhythm Method of Birth Control?

The rhythm method has been used for years by women who does not want to get pregnant but does not want to take hormones or who can’t take hormones. It is also known as the calendar method or periodic abstinence.

You must keep track of you periods; it is also safe to say that 24 hours after you ovulate you cannot get pregnant.

Many menstral cycles can be divided into three phases.

  1. Pre-ovulatory infertility phase – the  amount of days you are not fertile
  2. Fertility phase – days you will get pregnant
  3. Post-ovulatory infertility phase – post by subtracting 10 days from your longest menstrual cycle. This is the number of other infertile days.

The first day of your period is considered the first day of your cycle ( in order for the rhythm method to be successful you should track your cycle for atleast six months) take your shortest cycle and subtract 19 days from it. The left over number is the amount of days that your are not fertile. The day that shows up as you subtracted from your shortest cycle and the day that you got from, subtracting from the longest cycle should be the days to avoid sex.
