Is it Safe for Women with High Blood Pressure to Take Birth Control Medication?

Normal blood pressure of women between 15 to 45 years is 120/80 mmHg. Women having high blood pressure should take several precautions while taking birth control to avoid unwanted pregnancy. Blood pressure level of women can go up in women after taking birth control pills.

Estrogen and progesterone (female sexual hormone) have many protective effects on heart related disease.  Birth control pills available in market are the synthetic forms of estrogen and progesterone.  Birth control pills having the combination of estrogen and progesterone raise the blood pressure of women. Hence, women having high blood pressure should avoid these drugs. Estrogen is the major factor behind the increase in blood pressure.  However, there are drugs available having progesterone content only.  They are safer compared to the drugs having the combination. But, they are not completely free from critics.

Some studies have found that progesterone is capable of increasing diastolic pressure. Though the increase is minimal in nature, it can be fatal for a woman already having high blood pressure. Along with, other factors like age of the woman, past history of heart disease, addiction of smoking and other narcotics also play a significant role in increasing or decreasing the level of side effects.
