How Safe are Progestin Only Birth Control Pills?

Progestin only birth control pills are considered safe when used accurately and correctly. There is still a chance of a woman becoming pregnant even if the method is used correctly; a study has showed that 2-3 women out 100 could still become pregnant while using the progestin only pill. Although when a woman first starts using the progestin only pill she may have some bleeding between menstrual cycles this small side effect should cease to occur with continued use. Like any other birth control pill they will not protect a woman from contracting a sexually transmitted disease. A condom is recommended is recommended for use with a new partner.

As with regular birth control pills the Progestin only pill must be taken for an entire month before it will protect against pregnancy. For the first month a woman should use a second method of contraceptive such as condoms along with using the pill.
