Can Birth Control Medications Cause Skipped Menstrual Cycles?

Typically no would be the correct answer. Birth control pills are often prescribed to correct irregular menstrual cycles. They cause menstrual cycles to occur predictably and regularly. They also can shorten the menstrual cycle when a woman might be experiencing extended or long periods which reduces the risk of iron deficiency anemia which can occur with extended periods. It can also reduce or cure a woman from painful ovulations. There are several benefits to using birth control; however, skipped menstrual cycles are not one of them. A woman may choose to skip her period if she were to use the birth control pill by skipping the last week of pills and start a new pack.

There may be some side effects such as nausea and breast tenderness and occasional spotting with this method of using birth control, but to some women these minor issues are worth not having a full menstrual cycle. Also these typically only occur when a woman starts using a birth control pill for the first time. If a woman should stop skipping the last week of the pack, and return to normal use of the birth control pill, her menstrual cycles will return to regular cycles.
