Are Birth Control Pills Used For PCOS?

PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome is the condition which affects the menstrual cycle of the women and her ability to produce children. This is caused due to infertility because of the abnormal hormone level.

Women who are affected by this syndrome experience irregular periods. So birth control pills are used to maintain the hormone level in the body and control the menstrual cycle. Intake of birth control pill will stimulate the level of hormone production which the PCOS patient will not experience. These pills contain estrogen and progesterone combination. For the person suffering from PCOS, birth control pill will increase the density of the bone, bring increase in the fertility, reduce the level of male hormone and reduces the risk of ovarian cancer.

Birth control pill which contains progestin includes the level of antiandrogen. It binds with the androgen receptors and prevents the secretion of testosterone. Although birth control pills have positive effect in treatment of PCOS, but there are several disadvantages associated with it. Some of the problems faced are weight gain, problems for regulating insulin level and for the people who smoke the risk of stroke increases.  In PCOS affected women, birth control pills will prevent bleeding from the uterus and regulates the menstruation cycle.
