Can Women With Heart Disease Take Birth Control Pills?

Birth control pills for women with heart disease have created a divided debate for the medical fraternity. While some are of the view that birth control pills make women vulnerable to a number of heart diseases, others opine that these pills never cause heart attack or stroke.

According to the first set of doctors, artery-clogging plaque is created in major blood vessels due to consumption of birth control pills. These plaques narrow down the blood vessels and hinder the smooth pouring of blood into heart. As a result, several heart diseases develop.  They are of the view that consumption of birth control pills for 10 years can enhance artery-clogging plaques up to 30%. Some surveys have found that there is no positive correlation between heart diseases and second or third generation birth control pills. But, the medical fraternity is unanimous that these pills increase your blood pressure and cholesterol content.

Both of the above are fatal for women having heart diseases. The risk factors increase when the woman is above 35 years of age and is a smoking addict. Hence, if you have heart diseases, consult your doctor properly before taking birth control pills.
